Virgil White at our January 19, 2008 Annual Membership Meeting Potluck Lunch
Just a few words for the column. Have been busy on the garage and our Model T. Came down for the Civil War
show, was quite interesting.
Worked on a few things. Decided that since I was retired and have all this spare
time I should get my stuff at our Museum registered. So, with Dave Denny’s help I filled out loan papers on
it all, 42 pieces. Ashley got to the point that when I walked in the office she handed me some more forms.
So, if I can do it, so can you.
If you have things on loan to our Museum, get them registered.
Also, the weeds are growing. If you have things here plan on helping cut weeds around them. Our Live-On’s
can’t cut them all. Hope this finds you all okay.
Ol Wobbly

I decided to donate my heavy trailer to our Museum. Have not had it on the road for a long time. The Farm Crew
have used it to haul bundles for years.
About 1972 I needed a trailer. Found a 1948 Dodge truck chassis
in a welding shop. Had them convert it to a long trailer. Put a tongue on the front cross member and
connected it to the truck steering. It weighed about three tons. Put a surge brake unit on the tongue.
Used it for years. Reason we called it Ol Wobbly was that the steering system caused it to hunt when being towed.
Wasn’t violent, just sat back there and weaved.
One of the first times we used it was to go to Santee for spring show. Al Holten and I left Baldwin Park,
going down I-5, I noticed that Al kept falling further behind. We stopped in Oceanside for gas and I
asked if he was having trouble. He said no, that the trailer setting there swimming back and forth was making
him seasick, so he dropped back.
When we moved out of Baldwin Park we hauled about 6 tons of
stuff on it. It was a strong trailer and served us well. Hope it serves our Museum well for years, too.
