All incoming students must take Blacksmithing 101 or Blacksmithing 101-Youth prior to attending Basic 1: Beginning Blacksmithing.  All Blacksmithing students must be members of the Antique Gas & Steam Engine Museum to participate in classes.  Please go to the Membership link to register before signing up for a class.

Blacksmithing 101 ~ Adult 18+

Pre-registration and payment is required before attending first class.  Museum Membership is required to participate in any blacksmith class. 

Students will learn to light and work with a coal forge to heat metal and use hammers and other tools to forge, bend and twist metal into desired shapes.  Students will work on three projects (one each month) including their first pair of blacksmith tongs. A limited class size and low student:teacher ratio ensures plenty of coaching as you learn.   

Students must wear long pants and closed-toe shoes. Natural fiber clothing only.

Students should being comfortable eye protection and a 24-40 oz. wood-handled hammer (ball peen or the Craftsman/Vaughn blacksmith hammer - NO claw hammers!) Hearing protection, leather apron, and drinking water are recommended. 


Class Information:

Start Time: 9 AM

End Time: 3 PM  

$120.00 covers three consecutive months, students must attend all classes in their session (i.e. Jan, Feb and March) and includes coal fees and steel fees, an additional membership fee is required If you are unable to attend all three consecutive months you may reschedule a class. You must make prior arrangements with the Education Office to check for availability. There will by a $10 rescheduling fee.  

A confirmation email with your class coupons will be emailed to you no later than the Thursday before your first class. 

Class sizes are limited and if sessions are full they will be removed from catalog. 


Blacksmithing 101 Youth Paired Registration

Blacksmithing 101 Paired ~ Youth (Ages 10-17) + Accompanied Adult:

Pre-registration and payment is required before attending first class.  Museum Membership is required to participate in any blacksmith class. 

Minors (Ages 10-17) may enroll in this class with an accompanied adult, together students will learn to light and work with a coal forge to heat metal and use hammers and other tools to forge, bend and twist metal into desired shapes.  Students will work on three projects (one each month) including their first pair of blacksmith tongs.

You will be responsible for your own safety equipment (eye protection, ear protection,  protective natural fiber clothing and closed toe shoes)

You must also bring your own class tools: a sledge type hammer with a metal head and wooden handle (2 lbs or less) and leather apron.
